Help Your Health Care Providers Keep You Safe

Along with your doctors and nurses, you can play an important part in making sure that you receive the best health care. Here are some steps you can take to help doctors, nurses, and hospitals keep you safe and healthy.

  • Keep track of your medications – keep a list in your purse or wallet. Make a note every time there is a change in your medications. Show the list to your doctor at every visit.
  • Know what your medications are for and if there are any side effects. Know how much and how often to take them. Have the doctor or nurse write down all instructions so that they are clear and easy to understand.
  • Tell the doctor if you have allergies; they should be listed on your chart.
  • Have a family member or friend go with you if you need help understanding instructions or to help you ask questions.
  • If you are in the hospital, health care workers should always wash their hands before helping you with your care. Don’t be afraid to ask!
  • If you are in the hospital, health care workers should always check your wrist bracelet with your name before giving you medications or taking blood tests.
  • Know who is taking care of you. Ask health care workers to tell you their name and what their job is in taking care of you.

These are just a few things you can do to take an active part in your health care. Always ask questions and report anything that seems unusual to your doctor or nurse. Your well-being is their highest concern!
