New Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Health Plans Will Demonstrate Commitment to Whole Person Care
PITTSBURGH – Sept. 7, 2021 –Gateway Health Plan Inc. and Highmark Inc., today announced plans to launch Highmark Wholecare Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield Medicaid and Medicare Dual Special Needs (D-SNP) health plans across Pennsylvania. The plans will be available beginning Jan. 1, 2022.
Highmark, Inc. recently acquired sole ownership of Gateway Health, paving the way for the company to become a Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee. Blue Cross Blue Shield are trusted names in health care and have been caring for people since 1929.
The Highmark Wholecare brand will be committed to coordinating health care that goes beyond doctors and medicine to deliver whole person care to the communities it serves. The newly branded plans will be available in the following regions:
- Highmark Wholecare plans under the Blue Cross Blue Shield brand will be available in western Pennsylvania, and
- Highmark Wholecare plans under the Blue Shield brand will be available in central, northeastern and southeastern Pennsylvania

Existing Gateway Health members will be able to retain their same trusted doctors, and specialists – along with innovative support programs focused on caring for the whole person. Over time, members will benefit from accelerated innovation and technology, and a world-class member experience from Gateway Health becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Highmark, Inc.
