Finding the Right Doctor


Knowing where to go when you need medical attention is important.

If you are not sure about the type of care you need and your PCP is not available, considering the following information when deciding where to go for your care. And don't forget to utilize our Find a Doctor search tool, located in the top toolbar, to find doctors, hospitals, urgent care centers, in our network and close to you.

Primary Care Provider (PCP)

Examples of why you would see your PCP

  • Wellness visits
  • Vaccinations
  • Illnesses like
    • A sore throat
    • An earache
    • A cough
    • The Flu or Cold
  • Asthma or allergies
  • When you have a health concern
  • To manage ongoing health issues

To find an in-network Primary Care Provider call your Gateway Health Member Services Representative or click on the “Find a Doctor” tab at the top of the Gateway website:

  • Step 1: Go to the “Primary Care Physicians” tab
  • Step 2: Select your Product (For example, PA Medicaid or PA Medicare)
  • Step 3: Enter either your city/state or zip code. Or you can enter your county
    • Then choose how far you want to search for your provider
  • Step 4:
    • Select the type of PCP you would like to see.
      • If you aren’t sure, select “All Specialties”.
      • If you would like to find a pediatrician who gives medical care to children, select “Pediatrics”
    • Or if you have information on the provider, you can enter their:
      • Name
      • Type of medical service
      • Phone Number
      • Provider ID# or Group ID#

To find an in-network Specialist call your Gateway Health Member Services Representative or click on the “Find a Doctor” tab at the top of the Gateway website:

  • Step 1: Go to the “Specialists” tab
  • Step 2: Select your Product (For example, PA Medicaid or PA Medicare)
  • Step 3: Enter either your city/state or zip code. Or you can enter your county
    • Then choose how far you want to search for your provider
  • Step 4:
    • Select the type of Specialist you would like to see.
      • If you aren’t sure, select “All Specialties”.
    • Or if you have information on the provider, you can enter their:
      • Name
      • Type of medical service
      • Phone Number
      • Provider ID# or Group ID#

Urgent Care:

Often times you can see your PCP for an illness or injury before going to the ER. If you can’t get an appointment with your PCP within 24 hours, you should go to an Urgent Care Center. Examples of when you would go to an Urgent Care Center.:

  • Sprains or strains
  • Minor cuts
  • Minor broken bones
  • Burns
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
  • Earache
  • Sore throat
  • Low-grade fever
  • Rash
  • Colds
  • Flu
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Infections like pink eye or urinary tract infections
  • Rashes

To find an in-network Urgent Care Center call your Gateway Health Member Services Representative or click on the “Find a Doctor” tab at the top of the Gateway website:

  • Step 1: Go to the “Other Service Providers” tab
  • Step 2: Select your Product (For example, PA Medicaid or PA Medicare)
  • Step 3: Enter either your city/state or zip code. Or you can enter your county
    • Then choose how far you want to search for your provider
  • Step 4: Scroll down to Urgent Care Center and click on it
    • If you have information on the provider, you can enter their:
      • Name
      • Phone Number
      • Provider ID# or Group ID#

Emergency Care:

Examples of when you would go to an Emergency Room:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Chest pain
  • Symptoms of stroke
  • Having a hard time breathing
  • Vomiting or diarrhea that won’t stop
  • Blackouts
  • Fainting spells
  • Weakness
  • Poisoning
  • Having thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else
  • Broken bones
  • Severe pain
  • Serious injuries
