Gateway Health Plan ("Gateway Health") uses National Imaging Associates, Inc. ("NIA") to review orders for imaging services. NIA has had a security event involving Gateway Health member data. The data in Gateway Health’s systems was not affected in any way.
On July 5, 2019, NIA learned that an unauthorized third party had hacked the email accounts of four NIA employees. NIA shut off access to these accounts and began investigating. NIA used a team of experts to find out how much data was involved. The expert did not find proof that the data was viewed or misused.
The hacking happened around May 28, 2019. NIA reported the hacking to law enforcement. NIA believes that an employee who works with Gateway Health may have had their password stolen. Also, NIA believes that the purpose of the hacking was to send out junk emails. On September 16, 2019, NIA found that some Gateway Health members were affected by this hacking.
What Data Was Involved?
The data that may have been involved included some member names, Gateway Health ID numbers, doctor names, and data relating to imaging services ordered. The accounts did not contain any Social Security numbers or banking information.
What Are Gateway Health and NIA Doing?
NIA is working to fix this problem with a team of experts. NIA is also working with law enforcement. NIA has also taken extra steps to improve its security.
While Gateway Health has no proof that the data has been misused, we offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to potentially affected members. Details were included in the letters sent to potentially affected members.
