COVID-19 Vaccine: Expanded Eligibility and Scheduling an Appointment

We hope that you are staying healthy and safe. Gateway is reaching out with an important update about the COVID-19 vaccine. Pennsylvania has recently expanded vaccine eligibility to all residents age 16 and older.

The change was effective April 13. We wanted to offer some helpful tips for our members. We will share information about how to find a local vaccine provider as the vaccine becomes more available.

The vaccine is free of charge for everyone. You will not pay any out of pocket costs. This is regardless of the vaccine provider you choose.

Why is it important that everyone gets vaccinated?  
The vaccine will help keep you from getting COVID-19. It will be an important tool to help stop the pandemic. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (

Be sure to coordinate directly with your doctor for any specific questions related to COVID-19 or the need for the vaccine.

Scheduling a COVID Vaccination Appointment
Many hospital networks are accepting vaccination appointments. So are community pharmacies. You can search for appointments online. Can’t schedule online? Some providers also offer direct phone numbers.

The COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. This is according to the CDC. Millions of people in the U.S. have received COVID-19 vaccines. These vaccines have undergone the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history.

Information for Older Adults
It's especially important for you to get the COVID-19 vaccine if you are 65 or older. Older adults are at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. This is according to the CDC. Learn more here.

Continue to Follow COVID-19 Prevention Guidelines

  • If you need to leave your house, always wear a mask.
  • Stay at least 6 feet away from others.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Wash your hands often.

The CDC recently released a new report about mask wearing. It provides options for wearing masks to better protect you and others. Wearing a disposable mask under a cloth mask can improve fit. It can also give you better protection. This is according to the new report.
